3D Solar Panels
I worked for Solliance, a solar panel company, for five months on an independent research project. The project explored how solar panels can be manipulated into three-dimensional geometry. I studied solar panel material properties, and the mathematics behind origami and kirigami. The results of this project were a range of functional prototypes showcasing different geometries that could be achieved. In parallel, I also worked on testing and documenting how to use a die cutter on solar panel material.
Origami Overview
The project started by researching the material properties and manufacturing process of solar panels. Just like a sheet of paper, solar panels are flexible but cannot deform out of plane. Paper was used to explore many different types of origami and kirigami. This shows the variety of patterns that were explored.
Solar Cell Limitation Testing
To test if efficiency would be impacted by distortions, rigorous testing was done to find the limitations of the cells. Dozens of samples were tested by taking I-V curves and imaging while bending using a custom adjustable foamcore model.
Prototype Solar Panel Without Solar Cells
Prototypes of the protective shielding for the cells were made to test durability and flexibility. Some models were hyper-flexible and could approximate many different shapes. Other prototypes had a flat folding ability. One of the other prototypes was a curved pattern that was tested for applications such as bike helmets and roofing. This pattern could only be distorted into one shape determined by the pattern scored into the material.
Prototype Solar Panel Including Solar Cells
After prototypes were made using just the protective materials, more models were made, including the solar cells. This pattern was chosen because of how efficiently the cells could fit within the semi-rectangular sections. The connection materials between cells were also specifically developed for this prototype to help it withstand the tension of the folding.
